Sri Lanka FAQs

a few things to make your trip great!

what you need to know

Let’s go through the basics before you meet us on your big adventure to Sri Lanka. You are about to set off into one of the most spectacular places on the planet and we want to make sure you’re all ready! If you still have further questions after reading through this section then please get in touch with one of the friendly OLA team.

Where do we spend our first night on tour in Negombo?

We stay at the stunning Beacon Beach resort:

Address: 185 Porutota Rd, Negombo, Sri Lanka
Phone: +94 312 272 621

If we arrive 1 day early – can we have an airport pickup?

Unfortunately not. Air port pick ups are on day 1 of the tour only. We do however give you very simple instructions on how best to get from the airport to Beacon Beach in your information pack so you shouldn’t have any trouble!

I’m arriving 1/2/3 days before the tour – can you arrange some pre nights of accommodation?

Yes! We can arrange dorm beds at the place we stay during the tour. These nights would be paid in cash on arrival.

Can I upgrade to a twin/double room with my partner closer to the date?

Yes, though this of course depends on availability. Do I require a visa? Most countries will get a free 30 day tourist visa in Sri Lanka upon arrival. Please check with your local consulate or embassy for the most up-to-date information.

How much spending money should I take?

You will get a spending guide in your info pack, but around $30-$40 AUD per person per day will easily be enough.

Do I need hiking shoes?

Ideally yes, sandals and some trainers/running shoes would be fine.

Is it okay for me to bring a 25kg suitcase?

While we really don’t recommend bringing such a large or heavy suitcase, we can make it work. It will be a bit awkward or uncomfortable at times but if it’s absolutely necessary for you to have it the we can make it work. Our recommendation is to bring a backpack no more than 20kg.

Do I need any shots or vaccinations before travelling?

We would always recommend speaking to a healthcare professional and following their advice.

Can you cater for my dietary requirements?

We always do our best to cater for most dietary requirements. Vegetarians and vegans are welcome but please make us aware of your requirements before your tour so we can best prepare.

I’m doing the Maldives add-on, are flights included?

No we don’t include any flights for the add-ons.

Which flights should I get for the Maldives?

Emirates or Sri Lankan airways are the operators who fly the route.

Travel Insurance

Travel insurance on all One Life Adventures trips is compulsory. Our group leader will be taking care of you from the moment you arrive, though things can happen which are out of our control. This is why we require everyone who travels with us to have their own travel insurance by the time they depart for the trip. You will have a much more enjoyable trip knowing that you are covered no matter what happens! When you are choosing your insurance policy, it’s important to make sure it covers the following things:

  • Adventure activities included in the tour
  • Medical expenses
  • Personal belongings (in cases of lost luggage or theft)
  • Missed flights
  • To view our waiver and full terms & conditions please click here
You will always need a visa to visit Sri Lanka and it must be organised before you arrive. Sri Lanka tourist visa charges USD $30 per person for NON SAARC countries & USD $15 for SAARC countries, can be obtained directly via this site. Payments can be done easily online and you’ll receive confirmation within 48hrs. Easy! Just remember – your passport has to be valid for at least six months from the day of arrival. You will also need to have proof of onward travel (flight tickets out of the country).

We advise you to check with your local Sri Lankan consulate or embassy to get the most up-to-date conditions. One Life Adventures cannot apply for your visa for you, so please make sure you have sorted it by the time you arrive!

During your visa application process, you will be required to name the first location of your stay in Sri Lanka and their contact details. This location is:

The Beacon Beach Resort
Address: 185 Porutota Rd, Negombo, Sri Lanka
Phone: +94 312 272 621
spending money & extras
The currency in Sri Lanka is the Rupee and AUD$1 is roughly R115. When you join a One Life trip we like to keep extra costs at a minimum and include as much as possible to make it easier for you to budget. Luckily, Sri Lanka is a cheap country for most things! You will be able to feast of the freshest seafood and homemade curries for just a few dollars, and buy fresh coconuts on the beach for pennies. An average local meal of rice and various curries will set you back around AUD$4. The local beer called Lion is delicious and costs around AUD $2 per pint.

Spending money all depends on the kind of person you are. Each person knows their own likes/dislikes and spending habits. You may like to drink cocktails in hip lounges by the beach, or crack open a local beer under a palm tree on the sand.

Tips are expected in Sri Lanka. They are not compulsory, but there is very much a tipping culture for hotels and restaurants for around 10% of the bill. We usually find it easier if your group leader says how much the tip should be and everyone can pitch in together.
